The burning season will start on January 15, 2022 and the last day of burning season will be May 1, 2022.  Residents are strongly encouraged to get their burning done early because burning will be very limited if we have a dry spring.

Burning without a 2022 permit is a violation and burning privileges will be revoked for the remainder of the burning season.

Burning permits are ONLY for burning brush, cane, driftwood, and forestry products.  Burning of leaves, grass, hay, straw, stumps, finished lumber, or construction debris is strictly prohibited and doing so will be cause for immediate revocation of the permit. Burning must be done on land proximate to where the brush is generated. It must be done at least 75 feet from a dwelling, and adequate resources must be available to immediately extinguish the fire if requested to do so by a fire official.  Burning will only be permitted when weather and wind conditions are acceptable.

Independence Day Celebratory Bon Fire Permits

Independence Day Bonfire permits are now available at the Duxbury Fire Department

for residents/Beach Association

Cost is $25

The Independence Day Bonfire Permit process is as follows: To obtain a permit applicants must apply in-person at the Duxbury Fire Department at 668 Tremont St. We ask that you fill-out an application that will need approval from either the Deputy Fire Chief or the Fire Chief.  We will also ask the resident to read and completely understand the language of this application. This permit allows each Resident/Beach Association to apply for a permit to have a bonfire from July 1st through July 4th only.

Please be aware of the tides on July 1st through July 4th. Your fire must be constructed below the high-water mark and at a location which provides the greatest distance from a bluff or other exposures. No bon fire construction is allowed to begin until 4 PM. We will be inspecting locations and the size of each fire July 1st through July 4th.

It is imperative that you comply with all the conditions of this permit and the laws. We have included a copy of a few of the laws in this package that will pertain to your Bon Fire Permit. Failure to comply may result in cancellation of your permit for this year and in the future. The few of the restrictions are;

  • No driving vehicles on the beach, materials for fires must be carried to the site

  • No glass containers allowed on the beach

  • No consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach or in public

All materials used to construct your fire must be clean wood only, and of a size that will completely burn as specified in your permit. Clean-up is subject to review and may affect your ability to obtain future permits.

The Fire and Police Departments are concerned about large quantities of illegal fireworks. Please be advised that we are concerned about everyone's safety and we will be enforcing the law.
